Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment for many skin problems that is safe and effective. IPL treatments are non-surgical and non-invasive and can be used as a skin rejuvenation treatment for rosacea.
The main symptom of rosacea is persistent facial redness. People may look like they are constantly blushing, and there may be inflamed bumps and a burning sensation. Rosacea is a common condition that affects about 14 million people in the United States. In severe cases, the skin may become thick and excessive oil glands may develop. The cause of rosacea is not known, and there is no cure, but IPL photo rejuvenation treatments can dramatically reduce the symptoms and appearance of rosacea.
IPL delivers targeted light energy to specific areas of the skin. It may target only red blood vessels so that the light turns to heat to make the red vessels disappear. IPL has a range of wavelengths to target different issues.
During a consultation with our specialist at Head to Toe Med Spa, a patch test with the IPL hand piece may be performed to assess the skin’s suitability for the treatment. Treatments for rosacea usually require a series of sessions spaced about two to eight weeks apart to get the optimum results. The timing will depend on the severity of the condition being treated. One treatment takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. It may take from three to five months to see the results, but the redness will gradually dissipate over time.
You may look a little redder right after a treatment session. This may last from two to five days. You can use makeup immediately, but it must be applied and removed very gently.
While IPL photo rejuvenation does not make your skin more sensitive to the sun, Summer may not be the best time to have the treatments. The good news is that the results will last for months if you make sure to reduce the amount of direct sunlight the treatment area gets. You can use high SPF sunscreen, wear hats and stay in the shade as much as possible so your skin will continue to look good, requiring only annual maintenance treatments.
If IPL photo rejuvenation is the right treatment for your rosacea, our specialist may ask you to avoid excessive sun and self-tanners for two to four weeks before treatment. You may also be asked to discontinue certain skin treatments and to avoid taking ibuprofen or aspirin one week before treatment.
